Loan repayment calculator
Use this calculator to get a feel for what your mortgage repayments could look like before you talk to a lender. Enter the loan amount, the interest rate and the loan term, choose principal and interest or interest only, and pick how often you want to pay: weekly, fortnightly or monthly. You will see the repayment for each period, the total interest and the total cost of the loan. Interest only keeps repayments lower for a while, but it does not reduce what you owe.
A few things to keep in mind. The result assumes one interest rate for the whole term, and that rarely happens: many New Zealand home loans are fixed for one to three years at a time and then refixed at whatever rates are on offer (our guide to fixed, floating or split explains how to choose). It also leaves out fees, and it cannot tell you how much a lender will actually lend you. That depends on your income, expenses, deposit and each lender’s own rules.
The figures are a guide only, not personal advice. For a number you can rely on, talk to Andrew or Chris. We compare more than 20 lenders and can tell you what you could borrow and what it would really cost.
